Can a space have security cameras?
Last updated on April 2, 2026
Some hosts on Spare Space may have security cameras or recording devices installed in their spaces. This is permitted, but only if it is clearly disclosed to guests before booking.
All hosts are required to indicate:
1. Whether they have any recording or security devices on the property
2. The exact location of these devices
3.Whether the devices are turned on or off
You can find this information in the listing description or under Host Rules. If you have any questions about recording devices in a particular space, you can reach out to our team through the “Message Spare Space” button on the listing page.
Recording Devices in Private Areas
Spare Space strictly prohibits any security cameras or recording devices in private areas, such as bathrooms or changing rooms — even if disclosed. Hidden or undisclosed devices of any kind are not allowed under any circumstances.
What Counts as a Recording Device?
Any device that can capture or transmit audio, video, or still images is considered a recording device. This includes, but is not limited to:
1. Wi-Fi cameras
2. Video doorbells
3. Webcams
4. Baby monitors
5. Smartphones used for recording
Spare Space takes guest privacy and safety very seriously. Any violation of these policies may result in removal of the listing and further action against the host.
